The Office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner was established on 10 December 1999 (International Human Rights Day). The Commissioner has an independent statutory role to administer the Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Act 1998.
In accordance with the Act the Commissioner has the following functions:
The Community Education and Liaison Officer conducts general information sessions and provides advice on discrimination and prohibited conduct under the Act to the community, educational institutes, non-profit groups and non-government agencies.
The officer works closely with these organisations and the community to promote recognition and approval of acceptable attitudes, acts and practices relating to discrimination and prohibited conduct.
The Training Consultants conduct fee-based services for the corporate and public sectors.
General sessions are held as per the current training calendar, or training can be tailored to the needs of the particular organisation.
Sessions include general anti-discrimination and harassment training, training for managers and supervisors, contact officer training and EEO policy and procedure assistance. Go to the Training calendar page to see what is available.
The Act recognises that sometimes an exception may be made, and 'discrimination' allowed, on stated grounds. Exceptions are set out in Part 5 of the Act, along with the procedure to follow if someone wants an exemption from the Act's provisions.
